ST. CATHARINES, ONT. (July 10, 2012) - Coming off a win at the Spa Francorchamps Circuit for round three of the 2012 European F3 Open Series, Canadian formula car racer Gianmarco Raimondo enters the next round with the overall championship lead in hand. Making a first time stop to the iconic Brands Hatch Circuit, located in Kent, England, just 20 miles outside of central London, Raimondo will look to continue his string of excellent results, and maintain the points lead as the series comes to its halfway point.
"It will be a close battle until the last race because we are already at halfway with only six points separating me to second place," comments Raimondo from his European base in Lido di Camaiore, Italy.
With three pole positions, three second place finishes and two race wins to his credit in the 2012 series, Raimondo currently sits six markers up on second place and will need more strong results to leave Brands Hatch with his championship lead still intact. A new circuit for Raimondo will make the weekend more difficult than usual, however his RP Motorsports team has a wealth of experience there. A good starting point from his team has Raimondo excited about the weekend, and he has spent time preparing for the event by going over on-board videos from last year to study the nuances of the legendary circuit.
"I'm very excited to get this weekend under way," continues Raimondo. "The track looks very difficult from the videos, but I can only imagine once I actually start driving."
Qualifying will be key at the Brands Hatch Circuit, as passing is very limited. Working with the RP Motorsports team to get the car set-up down quickly will also be a factor in Raimondo's success this weekend.
"Like I've said in the past, in order to extend the championship lead, we must be consistent. It's already shown in Spa, however we gained only one point."
Raimondo will arrive in England Thursday for the fourth round of the 2012 European F3 Open Series championship, taking place at the Brand Hatch Circuit July 13-15.
