| Skip Barber: Racers Battle Hard at Legendary Road America |
The Skip Barber Racing School recently traveled to legendary Elkhart Lake, Wis., and Road America for Rounds Seven & Eight of the Skip Barber Racing School Presents the 2012 Mazda Summer Series. Newcomer Aaron Telitz took his first Formula Skip Barber win, while Andrew Hobbs and Jack Mitchell Jr. also celebrated wins for the weekend. Jake Eidson still leads the Formula Skip Barber Championship Points, with Adrian Starrintino only six points behind.
In the Group 1 opening race Jono Klein and Hobbs broke away from the group on the first lap, with Yukio Duzanowski close behind. Early in the race, both drivers traded the lead multiple times. As the top two battled, Dean Patzer managed to catch up. As Duzanowski moved up to take the lead, Klein took it away quickly. Aaron Telitz also made a pop for the top spot. He managed to move up and take the lead, but Patzer and Hobbs were close behind. Top three began to form a lead pack, however multiple penalties shuffled the finishing order. Telitz came away with his first win, while Hobbs and Jason Klein finished second and third.
After the first lap of race two, Hobbs managed to extend his lead from the rest of the pack. Meanwhile, behind Hobbs, the rest of the competition continued to battle each other for position. The group showcased aggressive drafting and managed to stay with one another. On lap seven, Greg Strelzoff and Todd Soukup broke away from the pack. Hobbs took the win with a comfortable lead, ahead of Strelzoff and Soukup.
Group Three race one had Tristan DeGrand starting with the lead, but quickly falling back and Mitchell Jr. overtaking the top spot. There was tight racing early on among the top four of Mitchell, DeGrand, Matt McMurry and Danilo Estrela. The front pack continued battling one another, but Estrela and DeGrand were later penalized, forfeiting their podium spot. Due to the penalties, Mitchell Jr. and McMurry took control of the pack. Mitchell Jr. took the win, with McMurry close behind, and Strelzoff managing to out pace the pack to get the third place spot.
There were a lot of position changes at the beginning of race two. Micthell Jr. started up front, but DeGrand and Strelzoff also led some of the first few laps. Estrela took the led from Strelzoff, but could not hold it. After another lead change, Mitchell Jr. made his move on lap six, but it wasn’t until his lead on lap eight that he took control. Battling among Estrela, DeGrand and Strelzoff allowed a little cushion for Mitchell Jr., who won. It was Estrela with a late charge to finish second, followed by DeGrand.
In Group 5 race one, Starrintino led after the first lap. Eidson, Teliz and McMurry were close behind. Eidson moved into first going into the third lap of the race. The pack was single file, with Eidson leading, but Starrintino wasn't giving up. He managed to take the lead from Eidson heading into an exciting final few laps. The four-car train pushed each other, as another intense battle arose for second between Eidson and Teliz. Starrintino held on for the win, followed by Eidson and Teliz.
After the green flag start waved for race two, Teliz led. Starrintino passed Teliz to take the lead of a pack that also included McMurry and Eidson. Eidson got an open black flag on lap three, leaving Starrintino, Teliz, and McMurry up front. Teliz retook the lead on lap eight, and held on to win, with Starrintino and McMurry close behind rounding out the podium.
